RICHMOND, Va.--Virginia Commonwealth's Courtney Conrad finished on a goal in the 96th minute to hand the Pitt women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime loss Sunday afternoon at VCU SportsBackers Stadium. With the decision, Pitt drops to 5-4-0 on the year while VCU moves to 3-2-2 overall.

With the score tied at 0-0, Conrad controlled the ball after VCU's Jessie Krasko's shot was blocked and sent a shot inside the goal's left post at the game's 95:30 mark. VCU outshot Pitt 5-0 in the overtime period. The sudden death score ended the match.

"As the game went on we stopped competing and stopped trying to follow our game plan," Pitt head coach Greg Miller said. "It showed in the shot differential combining the overtime and second half. VCU had 15 shots in the last 51 minutes. Give credit to VCU, we never had control of the game. They found momentum and never let up. We didn't have any type of response. It was disappointing that we had that type of effort, especially since we begin conference play on Thursday against Marquette."

The loss ends the Panthers' non conference portion of the schedule. With its five wins, Pitt tied a program record for most non conference victories in a season. Pitt also registered five non conference wins in five other seasons: 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Pitt had several chances to score. Roosa Arvas had an opportunity in the first half and Dana DelleFemine fired a high shot on goal that the VCU goalkeeper caught. Through regulation, both teams took four shots on goal, with VCU holding the overall shot advantage 18-7.

Overall, Pitt was outshot 21-7 and registered only one corner kick to the Rams' six. Both goalies--Pitt's Nicole D'Agostino and VCU's Kristin Cardin--finished with four saves apiece.

"Our one real positive was the play of Nicole in goal," Miller said. "She made some nice saves and kept us in the game. We couldn't reward her for playing well and doing her job."

Pitt opens Big East regular season play when it hosts Marquette on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The match will be televised on Pitt Panthers Television.
