PITTSBURGH--No. 24 ranked Marquette broke open a 2-1 game with three goals in a 15-minute late second half span in registering a 5-1 women's soccer win against host Pitt on Thursday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The match marked the Big East season opener for both teams.

With the loss, Pitt drops to 5-5-0 on the year and 0-1-0 in Big East play, while Marquette improves to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big East.

"We gave the ball away too much tonight," Pitt head coach Greg Miller said. "When we put together some passes and took care of the ball, we were dangerous. We gave them too much possession. Once again, we panicked under ball pressure. We need to do a better job technically of taking care of the ball and not falling under pressure. We're simply not athletic enough to make mistakes and then try to catch up. We need to play more simple and faster. When we make mistakes, it puts pressure on our backline to put out fires. We can't continue to play that way."

Marquette held a 1-0 advantage at halftime following an Ashley Stemmeler header goal off an assist from Mary Luba in the game's 39th minute. The Golden Eagles made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute on a Rachel Brown shot from 25 yards out.

But Pitt was still in the game. Trailing 2-0, Pitt battled its way back. Junior defender Morgan Sharick scored her team leading fourth goal of the season in the 62nd minute when freshman Roosa Arvas perfectly lofted a corner kick in front of the penalty box where Sharick burst through the defense and redirected the ball straight into the back of the net. It was the fourth time this season that the duo teamed for a corner kick goal. Arvas now has seven assists on the year.

"Corner kicks are what we've hung our hat on all year," Miller said. "Roosa puts the ball in a perfect position and Morgan does a great job of going to get it. We need to do a better job of creating corner kick situations because we've experienced much success in that area."

With the goal, Pitt trailed only 2-1 with 28 minutes left to play. For the game's next 14 minutes, Pitt battled to even the score, but Marquette put the game away by scoring three goals within a 15-minute span. Marquette's Kelly Maegan made it 3-1 in the 76th minute when she finished on a through ball from Kate Reigle. Reigle followed with a goal of her own in the 86th minute on a header off a crossing pass from Megan Jaskowiak. Two minutes later, Mady Vicker scored the fifth Marquette goal.

"It was frustrating," Miller said. "To finally get that goal and to be down 2-1, we felt like we were back in the game. Then we had a couple of mental lapses and the game got away from us. We gave up three goals in a short span because of a lack of details. Credit Marquette, they're an elite team. Defensively, we've got to put more pressure on the ball and offensively, we've got to keep the ball longer. We have to learn from it and respond."

Marquette fired 34 shots to Pitt's six. The Golden Eagles put 12 shots on goal to the Panthers' three and finished with 12 corner kicks to Pitt's two.

Pitt goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino made seven saves, including some that kept Pitt in the game.

Pitt is back in action at South Florida on Sunday, Sept. 16 in Tampa. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
