PITTSBURGH—St. Bonaventure scored a goal in the closing 20 seconds to hand the Pitt women’s soccer team a tough 2-1 loss on gusty Sunday night at Upper St. Clair High School. The game had to be moved from Founders Field due to poor field conditions.
Both of St. Bonaventure’s goals came off of set piece opportunities.
The Panthers controlled the pace in the first half, outshooting the Bonnies 11-5 and taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the 26th minute, Pitt forward Katelyn Ruhe tallied the first goal of the night. Ruhe collected a loose ball in the penalty box and finished to give the Panthers their 1-0 lead. With her fourth goal on the year, the freshman leads the team in goals scored. Pitt also failed to capitalize on several corner kick opportunities in the opening period.
Pitt played with a player down for most of the second half, but managed to hold off the St. Bonaventure offense until the Bonnies took advantage of a set piece chance in the 79th minute. St. Bonaventure defender Kaitlin Krisko tied the score at 1-1 when she netted a 25-yard direct kick. Anna Cunningham was credited with the assist.
The game appeared to be headed for overtime until St. Bonaventure’s Cunningham headed in a free kick through ball from Krisko in the 90th minute.
“We had tough conditions going against the wind in the second half,” said Pitt Head Coach Sue-Moy Chin. “But we have to do a better job of keeping our composure and stop hurting ourselves.”
With the loss, Pitt slipped to 3-4-0 while St. Bonaventure improved to 4-3-0.
Pitt begins a three-game road swing as it looks to rebound against Big East rival West Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 18. The game marks the start of conference play for the Panthers. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in Morgantown, W.Va.
