SOUTH BEND, Ind.—Notre Dame registered a 2-1 women’s soccer win over Pitt Friday evening at Alumni Stadium. The loss drops Pitt to 5-6-1 on the year and 0-2-1 in the Big East, while Notre Dame improves to 6-3-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Big East play.

“We had a good game plan and I thought the kids did a great job of executed it to the best of our ability,” Pitt head coach Greg Miller said. “We had more possession and more chances than we’ve had in the last two games. We still gave up a lot of shots against a quality opponent that’s much more athletic than us, but we held on. Nicole D’Agostino kept us in the game. She was fantastic. She’s had a great five games. She's done more than what she’s required to do to keep us in games. She’s certainly doing her part.”

“I’m proud of our kids, we fought tonight. Showed something different then we’ve had in the last four games. The big positive for us tonight was our kids connecting with one another. They were great, connecting with one another and just having a better belief of what we’re about. That translated into us being better in the game. We found it again and hope we can continue to play like that. Hopefully we can get a result on Sunday against DePaul.”

Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Cari Roccaro finished on a shot in the penalty box off an assist from Jazmin Hall. The host Fighting Irish went up 2-0 in the 58th minute when Glory Williams headed in a corner kick off the foot of Mandy Laddish.

“We gave up a silly second goal off a corner kick,” Miller said. “That’s something we talk about a lot. We didn’t defend it real well. They took advantage of it. That was frustrating for us as a coaching staff. We try to be deadly on the offensive end of corner kicks.”

Trailing 2-0, Pitt battled back. Pitt career goals recordholder Ashley Cuba scored her second goal of the year in the 86th minute when she finished on a loose ball in front of the Notre Dame goal. The score was a result of a corner kick that was cleared out.

“They had a player down, which was unlucky for them,” Miller said. “It wasn’t an opportunity for us to just kick the ball out of bounds. Ashley finished on the play. Four and a half minutes to go, we changed our shape to a 3-4-3, tried to play more direct and see if we could manufacture a goal at the end.”

Notre Dame outshot Pitt 21-6 in the contest and fired nine shots on goal to Pitt’s two. Notre Dame also finished with 12 corner kicks to Pitt’s two.

Pitt goalkeeper Nicole D’Agostino finished the match with seven saves in 90 minutes of action.

“With each game, she continues to do more than she’s supposed to do,” Miller said. “She’s gained more and more confidence. Getting her back into good habits, she’s made a lot of improvement. Tonight she had a fantastic warmup, her best this year and it translated to her performance.”

Pitt is next in action on Sunday at DePaul. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
