PITTSBURGH-The Panthers' women's soccer team completed an undefeated weekend by playing to a 0-0 tie with Auburn at Founders Field on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers came into the game ranked 21st by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Panther goalkeeper Rachel Brown (Burnley, England/Alabama) recorded her first shutout of the season, third as a member of the Panthers, and 13th of her career in the tie. She played all 120 minutes and made nine saves. She is now 1-0-1 in two starts this season.
Auburn outshot the Panthers, 18-6, for the game and had a 6-1 edge in shots for the two overtime periods. Tiger goalkeeper Megan Rivera matched Brown's effort with a shutout, notching three saves in the game.
Brown, the Big East Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, is a member of the English National Team and Rivera is the starting keeper for the U.S. Junior National Team.
Ginger Sellick and Tammy Waine led the offensive effort for the tigers with six and five shots, respectively. Pittsburgh's leader in shots was junior midfielder Laura Marsh (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) with two.
The Panthers defeated Georgetown, 2-1, on Friday in their Big East opener and with the tie against Auburn, their record stands at 3-2-1. Auburn is now 4-1-1 on the season.
Pittsburgh will host No. 4 Notre Dame and Seton Hall this weekend at Founders Field. Friday's game with the Fighting Irish is at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday's game against the Pirates is at Noon.
