PITTSBURGH-The Panthers' women's soccer team ran into a wall in the form of No. 4 Notre Dame on Friday night, falling 4-0 at Founders Field in Indianola, Pa in front of a Panther-record 516 fans. Notre Dame controlled the entire first half of play, scoring three goals in a span of 16:32 to break open the game early. Candace Chapman got the Irish on the board just 3:30 into the game when she beat Panther goalkeeper Rachel Brown (Burnley, England/St. Christopher's/Alabama) from 15 yards out into the top right corner of the net. Randi Scheller picked up an assist on Chapman's first of two goals for the evening. With 33:34 remaining in the first half, the Fighting Irish made it a 2-0 game when Amanda Guertin blasted a shot from 10 yards away past Brown into the right corner. At the 20:02 mark, Notre Dame got its third goal when Melissa Tancredi knocked her second of the season into the net from seven yards away. After the Irish outshot Pittsburgh, 11-1, in the first half of play, the Panthers responded by holding Notre Dame to just four shots on goal in the second half. Pittsburgh tripled its shot total in the second 45 minutes, with attempts by Lauren Sciocchetti (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), Annette Agredano (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson High Magnet) and Jacqueline Fix (Center, Pa./Center). Chapman got her second goal of the game on a rebound at the 76-minute mark to end the scoring. Lindsey Jones scored an assist on the original shot. The Panthers played a strong second half, according to Head Coach Roland Sturk.
"We just weren't aggressive enough in the first half," Sturk said. "Our second half performance was much better as far as intensity and focus."
The Panthers (3-3-1/1-1 Mid-Atlantic Division) return to action Sunday afternoon when they host Seton Hall in a Mid-Atlantic Division game at Founders Field. Game time is noon. |
