PITTSBURGH--Villanova's Victoria Gersh scored two goals in leading the Wildcats to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Pitt women's soccer team Friday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The loss drops Pitt to 5-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the Big East, while Villanova improves to 5-6-2 overall and 3-2-0 in the Big East.

"I felt like this was a game we could've won," Pitt head coach Greg Miller said. "This was the hardest one to take, especially since we had a lot invested in it. I felt like we had a lot of energy, we got an early goal and 1-0 lead that we haven't had for a while and we had a great game plan. Then we made some mistakes that led to Villanova goals. Give Villanova credit. They did what they had to do and came away with a win on the road."

Pitt took control of the match's momentum when it took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Ashley Cuba won the ball in the midfield and sped down the field where she found Alex Charlebois in the penalty box. Charlebois fired a shot that was blocked by a Villanova defender. The ball deflected to open space where Katie Lippert ran onto it, controlled it and fired a shot into the goal's upper right corner for her first goal of the season. It marked her third career goal and first points of the year.

Villanova answered with the tying goal in the 37th minute when Kaitlin Hogman played a through ball into the middle of the field and directly to an open Victoria Gersh. Gersh controlled the pass, turned, dribbled upfield and fired a shot into the goal's upper left corner for the score.

Villanova went up 2-1 in the 53rd minute when Gersh notched her second goal of the evening. Hayley Wilson's corner kick sailed over Pitt goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino all the way to the far post where Gersh stood. Gersh finished the play on an open net.

"We made a defensive mistake on their tying goal," Miller said. "Then giving up the corner kick goal was inexcusable. We never want to give up a goal on a corner kick. We gave up two at DePaul last weekend and another tonight. That just can't happen. Even down 2-1, I still felt like we had a chance to win the game. We changed our shape but we didn't really take the steps to be really dangerous. I felt like we let a lot of time go off the clock."

Pitt outshot Villanova 15-7 and finished with four corner kicks to the Wildcats' three. The Panthers took eight of their 15 shots in the game's final 37 minutes, but could not find the net. The last chance came in the 88th minute on a free kick just outside the penalty box when Riliegh McHugh sent a shot past the Villanova wall, but goalkeeper Kelsey Quinn was there for the save.

Pitt is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 30 when it hosts Georgetown at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Kickoff is a 1 p.m. Five matches remain in the season.
