SYRACUSE, N.Y.--Syracuse scored two goals in the game's final 14 minutes to defeat the Pitt women's soccer team 2-0 Thursday evening at Coyne Field. With the loss, Pitt dropped to 5-10-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the Big East. Ranked No.7 in the Northeast Region rankings, Syracuse won its fourth consecutive match and improved to 8-4-2 overall and 5-1-1 in Big East play.

"I was really pleased with our effort tonight," Pitt head coach Greg Miller said. "I'm really proud of the team. We put it all out there tonight and played with a lot of heart. The team really bought into what we were trying to do and it showed on the field. We just came up short again. It's difficult for the team to be complimented on its play when they came up short, but they played well. We all want results."

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie throughout the game's first 76 minutes.

Syracuse's Erin Simon gave the Orange a 1-0 lead at the 76:10 mark on a goal after receiving a pass from Rosina Callisto. Callisto's cross went off a Pitt defender and directly to Simon who finished. The host Orange went up 2-0 nine minutes later in the 86th minute on a goal by Jackie Firenze following an assist from Jenna Rickan. Rickan passed the ball ahead to Firenze, who ran onto it. Pitt goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino charged the play and Firenze collected the ball and sent it into the net.

"Katie Lippert had a chance to score early in the game," Miller said. "She hit the post after she trickled a shot past their goalkeeper. In the first half, we gave up a lot of shots from a far distance and they hit the crossbar twice. Most of the shots were from way out. We did a good job of making halftime adjustments and didn't give up as many shots in the second half. Offensively, we tried to create chances."

"We just have to stay the course and try to get three points on Sunday against St. John's."

Syracuse outshot Pitt 22-5 in the contest and had 10 corner kicks to Pitt's zero. D'Agostino made three saves on the evening.

The game marked the first of three consecutive Pitt-Syracuse matchups this weekend in various sports. Pitt Football is at Syracuse on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Pitt women's volleyball team travels to Syracuse for a Sunday match at 2 p.m.

Pitt is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 7 at St. John's. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Pitt's final two regular season games are at home against Connecticut (Oct. 11) and Providence (Oct. 14).
