Women's Soccer Registers 0-0 Double Overtime Tie at Villanova

ST. DAVID’S, Pa.—The Pitt women’s soccer team registered its ninth shutout of the season with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Villanova Sunday at Olson Soccer Field. Pitt is now 7-4-5 overall and 2-2-5 in Big East play. Pitt is still searching for its school record tying eighth win of the year. Villanova is now 10-3-4 overall and 3-3-3 in the Big East. Pitt and Villanova tied for the third straight season.

 

On the year, the Panthers have played seven games that have extended into overtime. Five of those matches have ended in a double overtime tie.

 

The shutout extends Pitt’s team school record to nine. Junior goalkeeper Morie Kephart saw her first action since suffering an injury. In playing the full 110 minutes, Kephart finished the day with seven saves in registering her seventh shutout on the year. For the season, she has played in 12 games, made 68 saves and owns a 0.46 goals against average. Her counterpart, senior goalkeeper Alison Finch has played in five games on the year, made 23 saves and owns a 0.94 goals against average. The duo has formed one of the top goaltender combinations in the nation.


 

 

 

Rain forced the game to be played at VU’s Olson Field. Villanova outshot Pitt 21-13 on the afternoon. Pitt’s best opportunities came in the first overtime period when they hit four shots including two that were saved by Villanova goalkeeper Molly Williams. Junior Liz Carroll led the Panthers with four shots, including two on goal.

 

Villanova’s Jessica Carnevale and Katie Ryan finished with four shots apiece.

 

Two more regular season games remain for Pitt. The Panthers are next in action at Providence on Friday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m., then conclude the regular season with a match at Connecticut on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
