Box Score 10/20 - Coach Chin post-game interview

INDIANOLA, Pa.--Ashley Habbel's goal scored in the final seconds of double overtime powered the Pitt women's soccer team past No. 19 ranked Georgetown 2-1 on Senior Recognition Day Sunday afternoon at Founders Field.  The game marked Pitt's second consecutive double overtime match and third straight contest that exceeded regulation.

Pitt honored its seniors, Jennifer Kritch and Kylie Veverka, prior to kickoff. The two would provide the Panthers with a strong performance in what was potentially their final home match.

"They truly led us through this game today," said Pitt Head Coach Sue-Moy Chin.

In the 30th minute, Pitt ended Georgetown's chance for its ninth shutout of the season.  A through ball from sophomore Kat Weiler moved the ball into the Hoyas' territory. After a Georgetown defender headed the ball toward the net, Kritch gained control and finished for the game's first score. With her 13th career goal, Kritch moved into sole possession of fourth place among school scoring leaders. She also tied for third place on Pitt's all-time career points list with 34.

Georgetown evened the score at 1-1 with a goal by Nicole Smith in the 59th minute.  Following a long throw-in into the box by Samantha Baker, Stephanie Zare flicked the ball to Smith, who then headed it into the net.

The two programs headed into overtime as neither team managed to break the 1-1 tie during regulation.

The Panthers applied offensive pressure and recorded the game winner with just four seconds remaining in the second overtime period.  In the 110th minute, Habbel retrieved a cross from Katelyn Ruhe and finished into the net's lower left corner. The Pitt bench rushed the field in celebration. With the score, Habbel now needs three more goals to set the school's career scoring record and 10 points to break the school's career point record. Cande Ruiz holds both records after she totaled 18 goals and 47 points from 1998-2001.

"They never stopped," said Chin. "They kept fighting and believing that they would get the win."

The Panthers controlled ball possession throughout the game, outshooting the Hoyas 14-5. Eight Pitt players took at least one shot during the match.

With the victory, the Panthers gained a crucial three points in Big East play and concluded an exceptional weekend that featured a win and a tie against two programs with a combined 21 victories this season. Pitt improved its record to 6-10-1 overall and 3-5-1 in conference play, while Georgetown dropped to 10-3-2 and 5-3-0.

Pitt hopes to continue its momentum as it travels to South Florida on Friday, Oct. 24. The match begins the final two-game road series for the Panthers this season. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Tampa.
