PITTSBURGH-The Pitt women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Big East opponent Marquette Friday evening at Founders Field. Junior Jennifer Kritch scored a late goal for the Panthers, but it was not enough as they fell to 6-10-1 overall and 1-8-1 in the Big East while the Golden Eagles improved to 12-2-4 and 5-2-3.
Marquette got on the board early when Michelle Compty notched a goal in the ninth minute. Midfielder Rosie Malone-Povolny fired a cross from the left side to a waiting Compty in front of the Pitt goal. Compty scored into the right corner of the net, giving Marquette the 1-0 lead.
The score remained unchanged until the second half when the Golden Eagles tallied another goal. Forward Christy Zwolski found teammate Alison Mallams on the left side of the Panther net. Mallams received Zwolski's pass and shot into the right corner of the goal for a 2-0 Marquette lead.
Pitt responded, battling back offensively with a flurry of shots in the remainder of regulation. The Panthers outshot the Golden Eagles 8-4 in the second half after a slow offensive start.
Minutes after Mallams' goal, sophomore forward Jenna Greenfield (New Hope, Pa./New Hope) attempted to cut the Golden Eagles' lead in half, but her hard-shot ball was stopped by a diving Marquette goalkeeper as the score remained 2-0.
With less than ten minutes remaining in the game, the Pitt offense narrowly missed another scoring opportunity when senior Janean Gardner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) headed the ball toward the Golden Eagles' net. Marquette goalkeeper Laura Boyer came up with another key save, diving to stop Gardner's shot from entering the net.
The Panthers' offensive persistence finally paid off in the 87th minute when Kritch (Northville, Mich./Northville) notched her fifth goal of the season off a cross from teammate Ashley Habbel (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) for the game's final score of 2-1.
Pitt will conclude its 2007 season Sunday in a noon matchup vs. USF at Founders Field.
