Women's Soccer Season Ends with 1-0 Loss to Louisville in BIG EAST Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Pitt women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Louisville following a goal in the game’s final minutes on Thursday night at Cardinal Park. With the loss, Pitt was eliminated from postseason play and finished the 2008 season with a record of 7-12-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the BIG EAST.

 

Pitt outshot Louisville 15-9 in the game. Pitt’s offense generated chances in the first half, totaling nine shots to Louisville’s four. Sophomore Rebecca Fraser tallied the Panthers’ first shot of the night, but her effort finished wide. Alexandra Jaffe followed with her first of two header attempts in the opening period.

 

The Panthers’ best scoring opportunities in the first half resulted from two shots on goal from Ashley Habbel and Katelyn Ruhe. In the 30th minute, Louisville notched a team save to stop the strike taken by Habbel. Cardinal goalkeeper Katie Zoeller saved the shot taken by Ruhe in the 41st minute.


 

 

 

The teams entered halftime tied at 0-0.

 

Five Pitt players recorded shots in the second half. Junior A’idah Clinton started the period for the Panthers with a shot on goal in the 49th minute. Additional shots taken by Jaffe, Jennifer Kritch, Liz Carroll and Kat Weiler missed their target.  

 

Louisville registered the go-ahead goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match. In the 84th minute, forward Giselle Mangal controlled a pass from Caitlin Rehder and fired the ball into the net from six yards out.  

 

Pitt’s Laura Berbert attempted to even the score with a shot in the 86th minute, but the ball sailed high.

 

The match marked the second time in three years that the Panthers fell to Louisville in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship.
