PITTSBURGH—Morgan Sharick headed in a corner kick from Roosa Arvas to give the Pitt women’s soccer team a 1-0 spring win over Marshall Saturday afternoon at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The match marked the start of Pitt’s spring 2013 competition schedule as the Panthers will also host both West Virginia (11 a.m.) and Ohio State (1 p.m.) in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

With just 50 seconds left in the 80-minute game, Arvas sent a high-arching corner kick into the penalty box where Sharick one-timed the ball directly into the back of net for the game-winning score. Sharick and Arvas teamed for four corner kick goals during the 2012 regular season.

The two teams played an 80-minute match spanning three periods. The first two periods were 30 minutes long and the third was 20 minutes.

Pitt had several opportunities to score in the first period. In the game’s first 10 minutes, Alyssa Meier fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar. A few minutes later, Meier had a breakaway where she sent a shot just left of the far goal post. In the first period alone, Pitt outshot Marshall 6-3 and had three corner kicks.

Marshall’s best chance to score came in the second period when No. 28 Morgan Cain took advantage of a Pitt passing miscue and launched a shot on an empty net that bounced off the far post.

Marshall outshot Pitt 12-10. Registering shots for Pitt included Meier (3), Sharick (2), Ashley Cuba (2), Arvas (2) and Alex Charlebois (1). Pitt goalkeeper Nicole D’Agostino made four saves in the contest.

Pitt played with just 11 players after Ashley Cuba suffered an injury early in the first period.
