PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team hosted a three-way scrimmage with Ohio State and West Virginia on Saturday at Ambrose Urbanic Field at Petersen Sports Complex. The teams each played two scrimmages of 45 minutes apiece. Ohio State finished 2-0, West Virginia 1-1 and Pitt 0-2.
In scrimmage one, Pitt dropped an evenly played 1-0 decision to West Virginia. WVU’s Amanda Hill notched the game-winning goal in the 19th minute when she headed in a corner kick from Kelsie Maloney. Pitt had various opportunities to score as two shots bounced off the post or crossbar. In the 17th minute, Roosa Arvas’ shot sailed just high over the crossbar, defender Jackie Poucel sent a header off the post in the 30th minute and Arvas’ shot in the 33rd minute bounced off the crossbar and was gathered by the WVU goalkeeper. Both teams finished with six shots, while West Virginia had seven corner kicks.
Ohio State defeated West Virginia 1-0 in the second scrimmage. In the game’s third minute, Ohio State’s Kristen Niederhaus scored the decisive goal when she trapped a pass from Ellyn Gruber and sent a shot into the goal’s lower left corner. Michela Paradiso also assisted on the play. West Virginia had several chances to even the score, with its best opportunity coming in the game’s final four minutes when Maloney missed left on a breakaway. Both teams finished with nine shots apiece. Ohio State goalkeeper Jillian McVicker earned the shutout in goal.
Ohio State won a 2-0 decision against Pitt in the third game. OSU’s Danica Wu began the scoring in the 12th minute when she rocketed a shot from 30 yards out into the goal’s upper right corner and past a diving Pitt goalkeeper Nicole D’Agostino. Niederhaus scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 17th minute when she received a ball in the middle of the field, turned and looped a shot over D’Agostino’s head. Pitt’s Arvas missed on a key opportunity when her shot off a corner kick went wide left. OSU goalkeeper Rachel Middleman registered the shutout. The contest also featured a matchup of Pitt coach Greg Miller and Ohio State coach Lori Walker. Miller served 11 years as an assistant/associate head coach under Walker at OSU.
2012 Big Ten Champion Ohio State (16-4-2) finished the 2012 season ranked No. 23 nationally, while West Virginia (11-5-4) won the Big 12 Championship and was among others receiving votes.
