Women's Soccer Registers 2-0 Victory Over Bowling Green State 8/29/2004
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The Pittsburgh women’s soccer team defeated Bowling Green State University 2-0 Sunday afternoon to improve its record to 1-1-0 on the young season. The first of Pittsburgh’s two scores came on a cross from Pittsburgh freshman Rachel Vecchio (Hudson, Ohio, Hudson) to returning player Kristina Francois (Springfield, Va./PaulVI). Francois beat two defenders to the ball and was able to put it in the back of the net. The goal came in the eighth minute of the contest. The second Pittsburgh goal came in the 39th minute when Vecchio scored on an assist from Katie Surma (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). Surma knocked a deep pass to Vecchio who finished the play with a strong shot. Pittsburgh prevented Bowling Green from scoring with strong defensive performances turned in by the defense and midfield players. All over the field players were patient with the ball and all worked well together. Following Pittsburgh's 2-0 win, the all-tournament team was announced as Vecchio and Francois were named to the squad. Pittsburgh's next game is Friday, September 3 at Founder’s Field against Duquesne University at 7 p.m. Pre-game festivities begin at 6 p.m. and include poster-making stations and picture taking opportunities with the Pittsburgh Panther mascot.
