TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team (9-8) suffered a pair of losses to No. 3 Arizona State (23-1) on Saturday night at the Diamond Devil Classic at Farrington Stadium.
The Sun Devils defeated Pitt 10-0 in game one (five innings), and topped the Panthers 8-2 in game two. ASU scored 13 of their 18 total runs in the first inning, and out-hit the Panthers 22-9 on the evening.
Pitt scored their runs on a pair of solo home runs as Kathryn Duran smacked her first career round-tripper in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two, while Holly Stevens launched her 31st career homer over the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth.
Stevens and Tori Nirschl were both 2-for-3 in the second game, while both recorded a hit in the first game as well.
ASU freshman pitcher Mackenzie Popescue (10-0) allowed three hits in game one, while Dallas Escobedo (12-1) tallied 15 strikeouts in game two, including the first eight Pitt batters.
