GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team topped Eastern Carolina 5-2, Thursday evening at ECU Softball Complex in Greenville, N.C.

The Panthers [14-5, 0-3 ACC] tallied 10 hits in the victory, en route to a 5-2 win over the Pirates [13-9].
At the plate, four Panthers walked away with two hits on the day, including freshman Hannah Edwards and Alexee Haynes, sophomore Olivia Gray and junior McKayla Taylor.
Of Taylor’s two hits, one was a two-RBI shot homer over the left field fence in the third inning. Gray and Edwards also had RBI-producing hits.
On the mound, freshman Brittany Knight tossed her third complete game of the season, giving up five hits and two runs, while striking out two.
A leadoff double by Haynes in the top of the second set up an RBI-single from Gray, which gave Pitt a 1-0 lead in the game.
Taylor extended the Panthers’ lead to 3-0 in the third after crushing her second home run of the season, a two-RBI shot over the left field fence. Taylor brought around sophomore Marissa DeMatteo on the hit, who entered as a pinch runner after sophomore Gabrielle Fredericks walked.
Pitt added two more runs in the top of the fourth, scoring the first on a bases loaded single by Edwards. Haynes and Gray led off with back-to-back hits to put runners on second and third for Kaitlin Manuel, but the senior walked to juice the bases.
With two away after a strikeout and ground out, Edwards slapped a ball too far up the middle for the ECU second baseman to handle scoring Gray. In the next at-bat, Manuel rushed home on a passed ball to put run number five on the board for the Panthers.
The Pirates cut Pitt’s lead to three, 5-2, after scoring a pair in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits. With runners on first and second after consecutive walks, a RBI-single from Tate McClellan scored the first, while a bases-loaded single from Megan Quick up the middle brought in the second.
The Panthers and Pirates would hold each other scoreless through the remainder of the game.
The Panthers continue play Friday, March 10 with two games. Pitt takes on No. 13/14 JMU at 11 a.m. and the Pirates again at 4 p.m. Pitt will conclude play Saturday, March 11 with a final matchup against the ranked Dukes at 10 a.m.
