GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 13/14 JMU Friday afternoon, at ECU Softball Field in Greenville, N.C.
The Panthers [14-6, 0-3 ACC] and Dukes were scoreless through three innings, before JMU [18-3] put up two in the fourth. The bottom half of the frame marked the only scoring inning of the game.
Freshman Hannah Edwards tallied both of Pitt’s hits, launching a leadoff triple to open the game and posting a bunt single in the top of the third. Pitt had one other base runner in the game as pinch hitter Gabrielle Fredericks walked in the sixth inning.
In the circle, junior Kayla Harris tossed a complete game for Pitt. She held the Dukes hitless through three, before giving up two earned runs in the fourth. Four of JMU’s five hits came in that frame.
The Dukes’ starting pitcher Megan Good gave up just two hits and one walk, while striking out 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After three scoreless innings of play in which the Panthers left a runner stranded in two of the three, JMU broke open the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
With two away and a runner on first after a walk, an RBI-double scored the first run of the frame, while a follow-up single scored the second.
Pitt will take on East Carolina in its second matchup at 4 p.m. Friday, March 10.
