PITTSBURGH—Senior Kelly Hmiel hit her fourth homer of the year, however, the University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a 9-1 decision to Notre Dame in the second game of today’s doubleheader at Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex on Saturday.
Hmiel blasted her fourth homer of the season as the leadoff in the fourth inning. She finished the day with three hits and four assists against the Fighting Irish.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Fighting Irish pitcher Brittany O’Donnell loaded the bases after hitting senior Ciera Damon and walking both pinch hitter Keli Gaynor and freshman Maggie Sevilla. However, on the next at-bat, Notre Dame fielded a ground ball to end the scoring threat.
Later in the sixth, senior Yvette Bravo smacked a one-out single to right field after pinch hitter Nikki Caruso singled. Caruso advanced to third, while Bravo was tagged out at second. Caruso was then left stranded with a routine ground ball a few plays afterwards.
Freshman Alexa Larkin pitched the loss, allowing nine runs on 15 hits in six innings of work. Larkin collected three strikeouts while walking three batters.
Notre Dame (35-13, 15-3 Big East) scored a single run off three hits in the first inning. The Irish added five more in the fourth and three in the sixth.
The Panthers (26-25, 8-13 Big East) will close out regular-season play against Notre Dame on Sunday, May 6 at noon. Senior recognition for Pitt’s eight seniors is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
