MOON, Pa.—The University of Pittsburgh softball team opened fall play at Robert Morris on Sunday, earning a win over California (Pa.) in the first game of the day 2-0, and dropping its second contest 6-2 against Robert Morris.

Junior Cory Berliner recorded the complete game against California (Pa.), collecting four strikeouts and allowing just three hits.

Pitt got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run bomb off the bat of sophomore Yvette Bravo. Junior Reba Tutt started the frame with a single, stole second base and eventually scored on Bravo’s blast.

Later, junior Alyssa O’Connell took the loss in the second game. Sophomore Niki Cognigni and senior Megan Livesey both recorded a RBI, while Pitt newcomers Emily Nowicki, Holly Stevens and Krista Rogers all saw action.

Pitt will open up the 2010 season at the Florida Atlantic Tournament on February 19th, facing Minnesota at 9 a.m.
