BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Pittsburgh Softball team opens its inaugural season in the ACC this Friday when the Panthers travel to California to take on CSU Bakersfield and will then compete in the Easton Tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
The Panthers will play their first games of the season at the Roadrunner Softball Complex where they will take on CSU Bakersfield in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. EST (Noon PST) this Friday. The Roadrunners enter the 2014 season as new members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). They were previously in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
Pitt’s opening weekend will continue on Saturday in Fullerton, Calif., where the Panthers are set to play in the Easton Tournament. Pitt will square off with Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. EST, followed by playing tournament host Cal State Fullerton at 8:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.
The Panthers will play their final game in California on Sunday when they take on the defending National Champions Oklahoma at Noon EST. The Sooners begin their title defense ranked No. 2 in the ESPN.com Top 25 poll.
This will be the first time that the Panthers have ever played CSU Bakersfield, Loyola Marymount and Oklahoma. Pitt is currently 0-1 against Cal State Fullerton.
The Panthers return 14 players from last year’s team and add four newcomers to their roster. Lauren Vinson in the lone senior, while Pitt has seven juniors, seven sophomores and three freshmen.
