TAMPA – Coming off a 3-2 opening weekend in California, the University of Pittsburgh softball team will travel to Tampa, Fla., this weekend to participate in the USF Tournament.
The Panthers will open the tournament against undefeated Illinois on Friday the 14th, and will then take on No. 1 Tennessee later that night. Pitt will also play Wright State, USF and Binghamton to round out the tournament.
Savannah King had a great opening weekend in the circle for the Panthers. King was 2-2 with a 2.47 ERA and pitched 22.2 innings. She one-hit the defending national champions Oklahoma in a 2-1 defeat, and picked up wins against Cal State Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount.
Maggie Sevilla opened the season with a bang as she batted .375 with six hits, five run, two homers and seven RBI. Carly Thea also hit two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, while two slappers, Ashlee Sills and Jordan Fannin, led the team in batting average at .444 and .400, respectively.
The Panthers have not fared well against this weekend’s opponents in their history, going just 5-28 against the field. The majority of those games came against USF as members of the Big East as USF holds a 17-4 all-time advantage against Pitt. The Panthers have played every team in this field besides Binghamton.
