BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team (7-7) fell to Kent State in their second meeting this weekend, 6-1, on the final day of the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla. Junior outfielder Jordan Fannin recorded all three of the Panther’s hits and their lone RBI.
Kent State got on the board first putting up three runs in the top of the third inning on two walks and an error by Pitt. With bases loaded and one out, Kent State’s Maddy Grimm hit a base-clearing triple to give the Golden Flashes a 3-0 advantage over the Panthers.
Pitt scored its only run of the game in the bottom half of the third on a single down the left field line by Fannin. The hit knocked in junior third baseman Kaila Balatgek, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Kent State scored again in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, two hits pushed two more runs across the plate for the Golden Flashes. Kim Kirkpatrick added Kent States final run to the board when she homered down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Pitt 6-1.
The Panthers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 28 when they travel to Lexington, Kentucky for their fourth tournament of the season.
