PITTSBURGH – Coming down the final stretch of the season, the University of Pittsburgh softball team (16-24, 5-9) is set to host the University of Notre Dame (30-10, 10-1) in a three-game series this weekend at Vartabedian Field.
Saturday will feature a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. which will air live on ESPN3. Sunday’s finale will be streamed live on www.pittsburghpanthers.com. First pitch on Sunday is also set for 12 p.m. Fans can follow live stats for the entire weekend by clicking here, and in-game updates will be available by following @PittSoftball on Twitter.
SENIOR DAY FOR STEVENS:
As the lone senior on the roster, Holly Stevens will be honored on Senior Day Sunday afternoon. All Stevens has done in her four years is set the program record for home runs (34) and runs batted in (123), and ranking in the top-5 for runs, walks and total bases. She is also five hits shy of cracking the top-5 in that category as well. Stevens will end her career as one of the most prolific players, if not the most, in program history.
NIRSCHL CONTINUES TO LEAD THE OFFENSE:
Freshman Tori Nirschl continued to stay red-hot at the plate against No. 8 Louisville. Coming off her second Big East honor of the season for her efforts at Seton Hall, Nirschl went 3-for-6 in a mid-week doubleheader against the Cardinals with two runs scored, and RBI and a walk. In conference play, the Pitt left fielder has team-highs in batting average (.310), hits (13), runs (10), home runs (4), RBI (9), total bases (31) and walks (9).
SCOUTING THE IRISH:
Notre Dame is paced by nation’s leading batter Emilee Koerner. The sophomore is batting .500 for the season (62H – 124AB) and carries an astonishing average of .606 in Big East play (20H – 33AB). Reigning Big East Pitcher of the Year Laura Winter is 19-8 overall with a 1.89 ERA, and is 8-1 in conference with a 1.90 ERA.
The Panthers will have 10 days off after this weekend series with Notre Dame. Pitt ends the season with a mid-week doubleheader at home against Providence (May 1), and then concludes the regular-season at Rutgers the weekend of May 4-5.
Saturday’s doubleheader is Diamond Day/Youth Day for fans. There will be airbrush tattoos, “Dress Like a Panther” races, poster making, running of the bases at the conclusion of the two games and an autograph session.
