Kaitlin Manuel was 3-for-3 against Penn State in their first meeting
April 29, 2014
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team will travel to Penn State this Wednesday for a doubleheader at Beard Field.
This will be the second time Pitt (15-25) and Penn State (14-31) have met this season. The two schools faced off at the FAU Invitational on February 22nd in Boca Raton, Fla., with the Panthers coming out on top 3-1. Kaitlin Manuel had the best game of her young career as she went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Carly Thea was also 3-for-3, while Tori Nirschl joined Manuel with an RBI.
Carly Thea has reached base safely in 18 consecutive games which is the longest streak of her career and the longest streak of any Pitt player this season. Thea continues to produce at the plate with a .385 batting average and she leads the team in almost every statistical category including average, hits (42), runs (24), slugging (.642) and on base percentage (.472).
Despite Pitt having a bye week from ACC action, the conference games that were played did not go in the favor of the Panthers and they have officially been eliminated for the ACC Tournament. Pitt would have needed Boston College to lose the remainder of their games, but the Eagles swept Virginia and the field of eight has now been set.
After this doubleheader, the Panthers will conclude their season at Maryland this coming weekend.
