TAMPA, Fla. – Freshman Tori Nirschl has been selected as the Big East Softball Rookie of the Year, which was announced Wednesday evening at the Big East Softball Awards Banquet in Tampa, Fla.

Voted on by the 13 head coaches from around the league, Nirschl is the first ever Pitt Panther recipient of a major conference award, which includes Rookie, Player or Pitcher of the Year. She was also a Third Team All-Conference honoree.

The Carlsbad, Calif. had a standout rookie campaign, leading the Panthers in almost every offensive category, including: At bats (156), batting average (.333), hits (52), runs (35), triples (3), home runs (11) total bases (99), walks (20), slugging percentage (.635) and on base percentage (.417). Her 11 home runs ranks fourth all-time in a single-season at Pitt and her slugging percentage is the fifth highest in a single-season.

Nirschl was just as productive in Big East play. During league action, the Panthers’ left fielder led the team in at bats (71), batting average (.324), hits (23), runs (13), home runs (5), RBI (13), total bases (45), walks (10), slugging percentage (.634) and on base percentage (.415).

The lefty ended the season on a five game hitting streak and led the team with 13 multi-hit games. She also produced six multi-RBI and finished with 27 runs batted in on the season; second most on the team. Nirschl had or shared a team-high for hits in 20 out of the 48 games Pitt played.  She also found herself on the Big East Weekly Honor Roll Twice (3/4, 4/15).
