Kelly Hmiel and Holly Stevens Earn All-Big East Honors

May 10, 2012

SOUTH BEND, Ind.--Senior Kelly Hmiel and junior Holly Stevens garnered their second consecutive All-Big East selections Wednesday evening at the 2012 Big East Softball Championship banquet, held at the Double Tree by Hilton South Bend hotel.

Hmiel was named an All-Big East second team selection for the second year in a row. The third baseman ended her career as Pitt's all-time batting average leader (.330) and ranks fifth in career homers (19).

This season, Hmiel led the team with a .309 batting average and 21 hits in Big East action. On the year, she recorded a start at third base in 51 games and paced the squad with 10 sacrifice bunts and 11 stolen bases.

Hmiel registered 10 games with two or more hits, including going 5-for-6 at the plate with seven assists and two putouts during the DePaul doubleheader on April 14. Hmiel drove in three runs against both N.C. State (Feb. 25) and Georgetown (April 11), while collecting two or more RBI in four total contests.

In her two seasons at Pitt, Hmiel posted a .959 fielding percentage on 292 chances. Hmiel was also named a 2012 American Eagle Outfitters Big East Institutional Scholar-Athlete and graduated with a degree in administration of justice with a concentration in law enforcement and a minor in legal studies.

Receiving a nod on the All-Big East third team, Stevens set the all-time career home run record this season (27). In just her third year, she surpassed Jacki Haar's 23 long balls during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Stevens is also currently seated third in career RBI (97).

Stevens made a start in all 52 games this season and paced the squad in hits (42), homers (nine), total bases (71) and slugging percentage (.455). She also recorded a team-high nine multiple-RBI games, including three with three RBI - Fordham (March 17), George Washington (March 18) and DePaul (April 14).

In conference play, Stevens chipped in a team-best 11 runs scored and six RBI. She concluded the season with multiple hits in 11 contests, which included going 4-for-4 against Providence (April 7) and 3-for-3 against Illinois State (March 2).
