Oct. 14, 2008
PITTSBURGH—The Pitt softball team ended its 2008 fall season with a 5-1 record, as the Panthers competed in three tournaments, two hosted by Robert Morris and another at Kent State. Pitt’s tough defense and several impressive pitching performances were used to outlast its opponents, during the fall. Junior Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) threw a no-hitter against Kent State on September 28th, while sophomores Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) and Alyssa O’Connell (Turnersville, N.J./Camden Catholic) and senior Kaitlyn Schuster (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) had solid pitching performances, as well. The Panthers were paced offensively by sophomore Reba Tutt’s (Culpeper, Va./Highland) .478 batting average. Senior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) followed with a .428. Additionally, freshmen Yvette Bravo (Downey, Calif./Warren) and Keli Gaynor (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) both contributed a .333 batting average. Freshman Kristen Cheesebrew (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) hit the Panthers only homerun of fall ball, while sophomore Alicia Broudy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hit three doubles.
Pitt produced offensively with the help of smart base running, as it scored a total of 30 runs and held its opponents to just six.
