PITTSBURGH-In the second day of competition, the Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team came close but couldn't overcome deficits to Maryland and Villanova in losing both dual meets.

The Panthers were tripped by Maryland, 191-162, and were edged out by Big East rival Villanova, 182-169, to drop their record to 3-5 and 2-3 in the Big East.

Pittsburgh did win two of the final day's 10 women's events, with Carolyne Savini (Egg Harbour Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) taking first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.85 and sophomore Jen O'Brien (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) topped the 3-meter diving competition with 286.2 points. Senior Moreen O'Brien (Springfield, Ill./Springfield), in her last home dual meet, came in second place on the 3-meter board with 283.9 points.

Maryland and Villanova split the other eight events with the Terps and Wildcats each winning four.

For the Terrapins, the 400 medley relay team of Megan Knepper, Jillian Martin, Bridget Mallon and Elizabeth Lavell won that race in 3:53.87, topping Villanova's top team by 1.29 seconds.

Other wins for Maryland included Mallon in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.87, Petra Adamkova in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.21 seconds and the team of Adamkova, Kelly Bowman, Mallon and Valerie Courtois in the 400 freestyle relay, touching the wall at 3:33.07.

The Wildcats' winners were sophomore Becky Koch in the 200 freestyle (1:51.66), Tori DeLollo in the 200 backstroke (2:04.37), Maddy Crippen in the 500 freestyle (4:57.73) and Brooke Corby in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.77).

Overall, the Wildcats and Terrapins each won seven events with the Panthers winning five events.

Pittsburgh will have two weeks to prepare for two dual meets in two days at Virginia Tech and Virginia on Feb. 2-3 before returning home for the Pittsburgh College Invite on Feb. 9.
