PITTSBURGH-The final dual meet of the year was one of Pittsburgh's best of the season, but the Panthers lost to No. 12 Virginia in Charlottesville, 135-103. The Panthers finished at 3-7 for the year but gained five victories in 13 events against one of the better swim programs in the nation. In the very first event of the meet, the 200 yard medley relay team of Carolyne Savini (Egg Harbour Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit), Ryan Redman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), Kelli Tielking (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Jenny Livingstone (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott) took first place with a time of 1:45.80. Redman was the difference with a 50 split time of 28.42 seconds in the breaststroke leg, more than two seconds faster than the second best team. The Cavaliers stormed into a commanding lead by taking the next four events. Kate Wrenshall won led Virginia's 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 free with a time of 10:14.65. Cara Lane earned the first of her two individual victories in the 200 free with a winning time of 1:51.29. The 50 freestyle event was won by Virginia's Carrie Ellis in 24.11 seconds. Teammate Carlie Dykehouse was a close second, just 0.18 seconds behind and Livingstone finished in third with a time of 24.49 seconds. Mirjana Bosevska swam past the competition in the 200 IM for the Cavaliers, with an NCAA B-provisional time of 2:03.70, almost seven seconds faster than teammate Rachel Schaffner. In the 1-meter diving competition, Pittsburgh sophomore Jen O'Brien (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) and senior Moreen O'Brien (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) got the Panthers 13 points by finishing first and second, respectively, with 289.13 and 260.18 points.
Lane, Ellis and Bosevska earned their second individual wins in the next three events with Lane taking first in the 100 fly (56.49), Ellis in the 100 free (51.82) and Bosevska in the 100 back (59.28). In that 100 backstroke race, Bosevska narrowly edged Savini, who touched the wall just 0.07 seconds later.
After the Cavaliers' Katie McWilliams won the 500 free with a time of 5:00.52, the Panthers took the next three events with Jen O'Brien edging Moreen O'Brien for first on the 3-meter board (268.88-267.22) and Redman leading the Panthers to a clean sweep of 16 points in the 100 breaststroke followed by a win in the 200 freestyle relay. Redman's time of 1:04.67 topped teammates Julia Carolan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Sarah Grant (Seven Fields, Pa./Seneca Valley) and pushed the Panthers closer. In the final event, the 200 freestyle relay team of Livingstone, Lisa Sappey (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville), Kristina DeWitt (Houston, Texas/Stratford) and Karen Thibodeau (Waterloo, Ontario/Bluevale Collegiate) placed first with a time of 1:39.24, over four seconds faster than Pittsburgh's 'B' team. The Cavaliers didn't swim anyone in the final two events except for exhibition. Some Panthers will compete in the Pittsburgh College Invite on Friday, Feb. 9 at Trees Pool before the Big East Championships on Feb. 21-23 in Long Island, N.Y. |
