EBENSBURG, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team defeated St. Francis by a score of 6-1 on Sunday morning in the Panthers season opener at the Ebensburg Tennis Center.
"I'm extremely proud of how the girls competed in both singles and doubles today," interim head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins said. "They have been practicing very hard and its nice to see it paying off in a dual match. St. Francis is a growing program who had six very talented freshmen in the lineup, so it was a good test for us and it should give us confidence going into our next match against Buffalo."
Pitt opened the match by sweeping doubles to take an early 1-0 advantage heading into singles. Taylor Washington and Jocelyn Lu took first doubles in decisive fashion 8-2. The Wickman sisters were victorious on court two, 8-3, while Kimmy Borza and Gabrielle Cantanzariti rounded out the sweep on court three with an 8-6 triumph.
Pitt recorded singles victories on courts 2-6 en route to the 6-1 victory. On court two, Washington won by a score of 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, and on court three Cantanzariti won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The Panthers are now 10-1 in season openers in their last 11 tries and are now 23-0 against St. Francis. Pitt will now play its first road match of the season next Saturday at Buffalo.
