The Pitt tennis team (2-0) picked up their second win of the season with a 5-2 win over the Penguins of Youngstown State (1-3) on Friday afternoon.
“It was important to start the season strong,” said head coach Alex Santos. “We have options in doubles and it’s a great day when you’re able to win three of the doubles matches. In singles we were able to win at 5 and 6 pretty fast and that gave us a lot of momentum to close the door.”
The Panthers started off the day strong by sweeping doubles and claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 (6-4), No. 2 (6-3) and No. 3 (6-4). Amanda Wickman and Audrey Ann Blakely comprised No. 1 doubles while Molly Wickman and Lolade Ogungbesan were at No. 2 and Kimmy Borza and Katherine Castro earned the win at No. 3.
The Wickmans gave Pitt an early advantage in singles as Molly quickly claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Carolyn Jesko on court six. Amanda was close behind earning a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Nehel Sahni.
The match was clinched at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Blakely over Marta Burak of Youngstown State, giving Pitt the 4-0 lead.
Washington fought hard on court one, but dropped Pitt’s first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Margarita Sadovnikova. Most competitors were finished before Pitt’s Castro and YSU’s Lackova even completed their first set, but after a back and forth first set, Lackova came away with the 7-5, 6-1 victory.
“I was definitely excited about Molly, Amanda and Audrey Ann,” continued Santos. “Not because they won, but because they just competed really hard and competed with a lot of poise and they were there for the team.”
Pitt returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when the Panthers host cross-town rival Robert Morris at 5 p.m. at Alpha Tennis and Fitness. Admission is free and open to the public.
