PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team (4-4, 1-2) recorded its first Big East Conference victory of the season as the Panthers defeated Villanova (0-2, 0-1) in resounding fashion with a 6-1 victory at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center on Saturday afternoon.
Pitt opened the match by winning at all three doubles positions. Taylor Washington and Jocelyn Lu topped Mancini/Smyth by a score of 8-3 in first doubles, while Kimmy Borza and Gabrielle Catanzariti were victorious in second doubles 8-2 over Kuse/West. Molly Wickman and Amanda Wickman completed the sweep by blanking Donadio/Congnetti 8-0 on court three.
In singles, Pitt tallied victories on courts one, three, four, five and six. With the match already in hand, Washington won her match in a third set tiebreak 6-4, 6-7, 10-4 on court one.
Catanzariti had little trouble with Sydney West in third singles, winning 6-1, 6-3, and Amanda Wickman topped Allison Kuse in fourth singles 6-3, 6-2.
In fifth singles, Borza breezed past Wesleigh Donadio 6-1, 6-0, and Karma Parbhu was triumphant in sixth singles by a score of 6-0, 6-2 over Anne Cognetti.
The Panthers are back in action next Sunday, February 3rd against California (Pa.) at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
