The Pitt tennis team (3-2, 0-2 ACC) dropped a close match on the road at No. 50-ranked Wake Forest (8-1, 1-1 ACC), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.
“We are definitely moving in the right direction,” said head coach Alex Santos. “Today we were as good as Wake Forest in singles, but when you lose the doubles point you have to be better than the other team to be successful. We played the most important points in certain spots of our line up extremely well but we weren't consistent enough across the board. The more we see this type of competition the more we'll learn. Our priority is to establish a rock solid base and an overall culture that will pay dividends for our program in the future. I have no doubts that the upcoming week will be the best we have had thus far in terms of preparation.”
The Demon Deacons picked up the doubles point winning on courts one and two. Seniors Taylor Washington and Jocelyn Lu fell 8-6 to the Wake Forest squad of Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner and the 50th-ranked doubles team of Luisa Fernandez and Samantha Asch defeated Pitt’s Amanda Wickman and Audrey Ann Blakely, 8-3. At No. 3 doubles, the Panthers’ Molly Wickman and Lolade Ogungbesan defeated Kristina Centenari and Brigita Bercyte, 8-2.
In singles, Pitt won three of the six courts. Blakely took the 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 2 over Kimmy Guerin, while Ogungbesan defeated Fernandez, 6-3, 6-3. The Panthers wrapped up scoring on court six as Molly Wickman defeated Zhang, 6-4, 6-4.
Wake Forest captured the match victory with their three wins in singles, which included a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 from Andrea Retolaza over Washington. Samantha Asch defeated Pitt’s Katherine Castro on court three, 6-2, 6-1, and Gardiner won 6-4, 6-4, over Amanda Wickman at No. 5.
Pitt returns home on Friday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. for an ACC match with the Maryland Terrapins. The match is free to the public and will be held at Alpha Tennis & Fitness.
