The Pitt tennis team (3-3, 0-3 ACC) came up just short in Friday afternoon's match against Maryland (5-3, 1-2 ACC), 5-2, at Alpha Tennis and Fitness.
Pitt dropped court one and three in doubles to give Maryland the doubles point to start the match. On No. 2, Audrey Ann Blakely and Amanda Wickman had a tight match going with Alexandra Stanova and Olivia Gaudreault of Maryland, but it was cut short in the tie break with the doubles point already decided.
In singles, Maryland's Nataliya Bredikhina captured the win for the Terrapins on court four with a hard-fought win over Amanda Wickman, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
Pitt's points came from junior Molly Wickman on court five and Blakely on court one. Wickman took the first set 6-3, but had to fight for her second set with a 7-6 (7-3) victory. Blakely also jumped out to a lead with a 6-4 win in the first set, but fell 0-6 in the second. In the third set, she battled to the 6-4 win, giving the final score of 5-2 on the day.
