SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Pitt tennis team fell short on the road Friday afternoon as the Panthers fell 4-3 in ACC action against Syracuse at the Drumlins Country Club.
Pitt clinched the doubles point as well as two singles matches, but it wouldn’t be enough for the team victory.
“It was great to see our doubles working on full cylinders and to win that point with our No. 3 team still playing,” said head coach Alex Santos. “In singles, we gave a step forward but it wasn’t big enough to get us the outcome we wanted. We take some confidence out of this match and we will work hard to continue to develop our strengths.”
In doubles, the veteran Pitt tandem of redshirt senior Amber Washington and junior Callie Frey downed Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez, 6-1, at the No. 1 position. Soon after, junior Audrey Ann Blakely and sophomore Clara Lucas turned in a 6-3 victory over Anna Shkudun and Martia Tritou, clinching the doubles point.
Moving to singles, sophomore Gabriela Rezende was unable to hold off Knutson at No. 3 as she fell 6-4, 6-3. However, Frey gave Pitt the lead again as she defeated Tritou on court No. 4, 6-3, 6-3.
The Orange claimed two straight matches at No. 2 and No. 5 to take a 3-2 lead in the dual.
Washington tied it up again after taking on Shkudun at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 7-5.
Syracuse would claim the final singles match, 6-1, 6-2, and the dual overall.
The Panthers return home Saturday, March 11 at 3 p.m. to host Dayton at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
