VILLANOVA, Pa.--The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team earned its eighth doubles point of the season, leading the Panthers to a 6-1 victory over Villanova at the Villanova Tennis Complex on Saturday.
"Today's victory was an outstanding team effort," Pitt head coach George Dieffenbach said. "Everyone was intense and focused."
Pitt (7-6, 3-4 Big East) swept the doubles matches this afternoon. Playing up in the No. 1 slot, the pairing of junior Gabrielle Catanzariti and sophomore Kimmy Borza captured an 8-4 victory over Villanova's Mikelle Mancini and Sydney West.
In singles action, four Panthers earned straight-set wins, including sophomore Taylor Washington, A. Wickman, M. Wickman and Borza. Washington improved to 16-6 on the year, while M. Wickman"s victory was her 10th win of the season and the third in the last four matches.
Additionally, Catanzariti battled back from a 6-0 loss in the first set to claim a 6-2 win in the second set. She then outlasted the Wildcats' Allison Solberg in the deciding set at 6-4.
The Panthers continue their three-match road stint against Big East foe Seton Hall on Sunday, March 25 at noon.
