March 25, 2008
PITTSBURGH--The Pitt women's tennis team upended Carnegie Mellon, 8-1, in an outdoor match on CMU's campus. The Panthers extended their win streak to four matches and are 7-6 on the season. The Pitt-CMU match is generally a touch matchup, especially since the Tartans (11-4) are nationally ranked seventh overall (DIII). However, Pitt swept CMU in singles play and won two out of three doubles matches. In No. 1 doubles, the duo of junior Kristy Borza (Beaver Area/Beaver) and freshman Elizabeth Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson) edged out their opponents, 8-6. Additionally, seniors Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) also garnered the doubles at 8-3. In No. 2 singles, sophomore Sabrina Visram (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) won a hard-fought match against Jenn Chui. After Visram won the first set, Chui forced a tiebreaker. Visram then ended the match with final scores of 6-2, 5-7, (10-6). Junior Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) also defeated her singles opponent, earning her 14th singles win of the season. She is now just 19 shy of being the fourth member of the 100-Victory Club, this season. Borza extended the all-time wins record to 131, while Smith improved to 126 career victories, tying her for second place. The Panthers travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Friday to take on Villanova for a Big East contest at 1:30 p.m. Doubles
