PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team concluded the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational, hosted by Navy, with an undefeated day in the three-day tournament.
"We had two primary goals coming into this tournament," stated head coach Alex Santos. "The first was to play our best tennis on the final day of the invitational, and the second was to leave Annapolis as a better team. We definitely accomplished both and we know exactly where we stand in regards to our strengths and what we need to keep improving."
In Flight B doubles, the duo of Kimmy Borza and Audrey Ann Blakely were strong in an 8-3 finals win over Hueffner and Myers of Air Force. Blakely totaled two finals victories on the day as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Magday of Air Force in the Flight C finals.
"Kimmy and Audrey Ann played an incredible doubles match in terms of their energy, will, and focus," said Santos. "It was great to see the level of their tennis raise tremendously in the final because of these key pieces. Audrey Ann took the confidence and momentum from her doubles into her singles match. I was particularly happy with the way she was dictating play but also working on her defensive skills."
The Flight D finals saw two Panthers dueling it out for the title as Lolade Ogungbesan and Molly Wickman met on the court. Ogungbesan, a freshman, defeated Wickman in a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win.
"Lolade and Molly pushed each other to the limits in a very tough, competitive match," said Santos. "I was pleased that they handled the inter-team competition with professionalism and maturity, and that they were able to leave their competitiveness on the court once the match was over. We are looking forward to a few solid days of practice to prepare the Virginia Tech Invitational next weekend."
The Panthers will be on the road again next weekend at the Hokie Fall Invite, hosted by Virginia Tech Sept. 27-29 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
