MORGANTOWN, W.Va.— Sophomore Kimmy Borza was named the Flight C Singles Champion as the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team completed the final day of action in the 2011 Martha Thorn Invitational held at West Virginia University on Sunday.
Seeded as the No. 2 player in the bracket, Borza finished the tournament with a 3-0 singles record. She garnered the title with a pair of 6-1 sets over junior Karma Parbhu in the finals. Parbhu finished the weekend at 2-1 in singles action.
In doubles, Borza was teamed with junior Gabrielle Catanzariti in the Flight B Championship match. The Panthers finished the weekend 2-1 after falling 8-3 to West Virginia’s top-seeded team of Chupa/Tanik in the title game.
In another finals' victory, sophomore Taylor Washington won the consolation bracket in Flight B. Washington earned a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Mary Chupa (WVU) and went 3-1 at the event.
Lastly, in the Flight B Singles Championship, freshman Molly Wickman was named the runner-up. She dropped a two set match (6-3, 6-1) to Katie Blow (Virginia Tech) this morning. Wickman finished the weekend at 3-1 in singles play. She was also 2-1 alongside her sister, Amanda Wickman, in doubles play.
The Panthers will take a week off of competition and return to action Oct. 20-23 in the ITA Regional Championships in Norfolk, Va.
