World TeamTennis

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team will be recognized for their academic achievements when Sir Elton John and Billie Jean King’s charity event, the 20th annual Mylan World TeamTennis Smash Hits, comes to the Petersen Events Center on October 16.

The Panthers will be acknowledged for earning both the top women’s team and the overall highest team GPA distinction for the second-consecutive year.

“I’m very proud of the tennis team,” Academic Advisor Maura McAndrew said. “I think they work really hard. There are a lot of ambitious students on the team and they take their academics seriously.”

Tennis greats such as Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Andy Roddick, Martina Navratilova and more will be on court to compete on two teams captained by King and John. The pros will play a match using the World TeamTennis (WTT) coed team format. Sir Elton John will also participate in a celebrity doubles match to open the event. Proceeds will benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force.

Fans can purchase tickets through Ticketmaster.com. Courtside seats are $125, Premium reserved seats are $75, and Corner reserved seats are $40. The Pittsburgh ticket office will also be selling tickets the day of the event. Same prices apply.

Since 1993, World TeamTennis has raised more than $10.5 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and various local AIDS charities. A portion of the funds raised at the pre-match Smash Hits VIP Reception will be specifically targeted for local programs.
