Borza Becomes Fastest Player To Join 100-Victory Club
Oct. 12, 2007
PITTSBURGH--Junior Kristy Borza made Pitt history as she became the fastest tennis player to reach the 100-career wins milestone. Borza joined the 100-Victory club this fall after competing in just 137 career matches and becomes the 10th player in Panther's history to do so. Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) joined the 100-Victory Club on Sept. 14th after she defeated Denise Liebschner of Seton Hall (6-1, 6-0) en route of her Women's Eastern Collegiate Championship. At the moment she improved to 100-37 at Pitt, in just her third season. Winning that championship would be the second consecutive title for Borza, as she previously won the Carnegie Mellon Invitational to open the fall season. Borza won her first nine singles matches of the year before falling to Anna Novo of South Carolina Upstate. As the second-ever junior to accomplish this feat, Borza has been named back-to-back team MVP as a freshman and sophomore. She also holds an impressive 62-16 career singles mark and a 44-24 career doubles record. Borza holds the record for most wins in a season when she posted a 27-7 mark last year and tied the second-best spot in the same category as a freshman with a 26-7 record. In most doubles wins in a season, she ranks tied for first with 21 victories in both seasons. With 106 career victories to date, Borza now trails Annie Davies by just 20 victories on the all-time career wins list in Panther history, including current senior Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), who holds 107 victories. The Panthers return to action this fall on Oct. 12, traveling to Old Dominion for the Hampton Roads Invitational.
