Coach Brent Shelby enters his third season with the Panthers as an assistant coach for throws. Last season, Shelby coached Garrett Larkin to ten top 10 finishes in the shot put and hammer. Larkin also placed first in the shot put at the Fred Hardy Invite. Shelby then led Larkin to a sixth place finish at the Outdoor Big East Championships in the shot put. Additionally, Shelby guided Sarah Anderson to a first place in the hammer at the Charlotte 49er Classic and two second places in the hammer at the Fred Hardy Invite and Aggie Relays.
In his first season, he coached senior stand out A.J. Kielinski. Kielinski went on to take third place at the Indoor Big East Championships. Klielinski also set the school records in both the weight and hammer throws during Shelby's first season. In this season, Shelby also coached Kim Rorabaugh to a fifth place finish in the hammer at the Outdoor Big East Championships. Shelby, a 2006 graduate of and five-year thrower at Kent State, brings an abundance of experience and knowledge to Pitt.
While at Kent State, Coach Shelby competed in both indoor and outdoor track throwing the discus, shot put, hammer and weight. He was a four-time outdoor regional qualifier in the discus, as well as a three-time outdoor regional qualifier in the shot put and an outdoor regional qualifier in the hammer. As a sophomore, he captured the 2004 Mid-American Conference outdoor track and field discus title. Coach Shelby holds the second-best all-time indoor shot put throw in school history.
Throughout his college career, Coach Shelby found success in indoor competition as well. He was an indoor NCAA provisional qualifier in the shot put both his junior and redshirt-senior years. He was also crowned the 2005 MAC indoor track and field shot put champion. That same year as a junior, he placed first in the shot put at the Central Collegiate Championships. Shelby also holds some of the school's top marks at Kent State in the outdoor shot put, where he is third all-time, and in the discus, with the fifth-best all-time throw. He was named to the 1st team all-MHC Selection twice in his career. He's also been named to the 2nd team All-MAC selections three times.
A 2001 graduate of Westlake High School in Westlake, Ohio, Coach Shelby was a three-time captain of the track and field team.
