STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Freshman Taranisha Taylor won the 60 meter hurdles as the Pitt men’s and women’s track and field teams completed action on Saturday afternoon at the Penn State Relays.

After qualifying second in prelims with a time of 8.71, Taylor came back to capture the title in a career-best time of 8.63.

Taylor was also one of three Pitt student-athletes to reach the finals of the 60 meter dash, finishing sixth overall in 7.68. Funmi Alabi was second in the finals as she tied her season-best time of 7.42, while Jonnique Lawrence was fourth as she crossed the line in 7.51.

Lawrence then placed second in the 200 meter dash at 24.53, while Arielle Fonrose was four-tenths of a second behind her in third place with a time of 24.94. Jordan Lee placed second overall in the 500 meter dash, finishing in a time of 1:20.59.

Freshman Rachel Brown set a personal-best in the 3,000 meter run with a third place finish in a time of 10:24.35, while sophomore Brittany Lightfoot set a career-mark in the weight throw as she finished fourth with a distance of 15.73 meters (51-07.25 feet). Haley Springman was sixth in that same event with a throw of 15.03 meters (49-03.75).



The women’s 4x200 meter relay team of Taylor, Alabi, Taylor Ellis-Watson and Fonrose was just behind Penn State for second place in a time of 1.37.50. Both teams broke the previous facility record of 1:37.76 set back in 2006. Pitt also finished second in the 4x400 meter relay.

The men’s team saw Tashaun Hill place third overall in the 60 meter hurdles as he crossed the line in 8.03. Reginald Steele IV and Aaron Turner each made the 60 meter dash finals placing fifth and eighth, respectively.

Distance runner Luke Swomley set a personal best in the 3,000 meter run with a sixth place finish in a time of 8:51.78. Micah Murray had a top-five finish in the 200 meter dash, placing fourth overall in 21.83, while Josh Mindlin was seventh at 22.39.

In the field events, Andrew Wells finished third in the weight throw (18.15m – 59-06.75 feet), and Steele was third in the long jump with a distance of 22-07.00.

The Panthers head back to Penn State next Saturday, January 12th, to partake in the Nittany Lion Challenge.
