PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's track and field teams began competition Friday at USF Track and Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
While only a handful of Pitt athletes competed on the first day of the meet, the Panthers turned in several strong performances.
For the men’s team, senior Kurt Barnhart recorded a personal best in the hammer throw (53.15 meters) and finished seventh. He was the only athlete from the men’s team to compete.
On the women's side, junior Elizabeth Kline posted some impressive results through four heptathlon events. She set a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles (13.99) as she finished second and also finished third in the 200-meter dash (25.32).
“Elizabeth Kline had a great day,” Pitt head coach Alonzo Webb said. “She posted some personal best times today and it was a good day overall for us.”
The heptathlon will conclude on Saturday with the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run events.
After the first day of competition, the men's team stands in 10th place with two points while the women's team has not scored any points as a team yet.
The meet will continue on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with the men's javelin event.
