Panthers Begin NCAA East Regional Championships with Strong Performances

PITTSBURGH- The University of Pittsburgh men’s and women’s track and field teams turned in impressive performances on the first day of the 2012 NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships in Jacksonville, Fla. on Thursday.

For the men’s team, senior Jermaine Lowery finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles prelims, crossing the finish line in 51.04. He qualified for Friday’s quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. With his time of 53.19, senior Jerome Lowery narrowly missed advancing to the next round in the same event.

Senior Antony Hobwana finished 13th in the 100-meter dash prelims (10.48) and moves on to the next round on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Sophomore Micah Murray qualified for the 400-meter quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m. with his time of 46.95 in the prelims.

 “Our student-athletes performed well today against a high level of competition,” Pitt head coach Alonzo Webb said. “We got off to a good start this weekend as a few of our athletes were able to advance to the next round.”

On the women’s side, senior Cambrya Jones finished second in her heat and ninth overall in the 100-meter dash prelims (11.47) and qualified for Friday’s quarterfinals at 6:45 p.m.  Jones is also set to race in the 200-meter dash prelims set for Friday at 8:25 p.m.  She is seeded fourth heading into the event.
