Pitt Takes Third in Akron, Claims Two Event Crowns

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women's track and field team opened its indoor season at the Akron Quad this weekend by winning two event titles and placing third with 96.50 points. The University of Akron played host to the event and garnered first place honors with a point total of 183.50. Amy Ruffolo paced the competition in the 3,000 meters, claiming first with a time of 10:05.61. Ruffolo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny/Duquesne) was joined in the top three by freshman Anna Yoney (Irwin, Pa./Norwin), who crossed the finish line in third at 10:12.20. Jenn Seitz (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) was the other Panther to grace the top of the placewinner's podium after completing the 400-meter dash in 1:00.54. Several other Pitt runners posted solid performances. Included among them was a pair of top five finishes from Alexandra Briggs. Briggs (Washington, Pa/Washington) took third in the mile and fourth in the 800 meters, contributing 11 team points toward the Panthers' cause. Kristin Johnson (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) cleared a height of 1.65 meters in the high jump and claimed second place in the process. Her fellow high jumper Erinn McMahon (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) found herself in the top five among all competitors with a height of 1.55 meters and Aurielle McCauley (Romulus, Mich./Romulus) earned fourth place for her 9.30 effort in the 60-meter hurdles.
The track and field season continues today as other members of the team are competing in the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
