Track and Field Takes on Competition at Penn State Indoor Open

PiTTSBURGH - The Pitt women's track and field team continued its 2007-08 indoor season this weekend at the Penn State Indoor Open. The Panthers posted numerous top-five performances in their first of three consecutive weekend trips to State College this season.
Kari Hedderick (Erie, Pa./Fort Lebouf) captured one oft Pitt's top-five plaudits in the women's 500 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:14.65, taking second place and narrowly missing and event title by a fraction of a second. Senior Anna Yoney (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) took third in the mile run after crossing the finish line in 5:01.87.
The top-five honors continued to pile up for the Panthers in the middle distance events as Alexandra Briggs and Heather Calisto grabbed third and fourth place, respectively. Briggs (Washington, Pa./Washington) clocked in at 2:56.86 in the 1000 meters, while the freshman Calisto (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) earned her honors in the 800 meter run.
Kristin Johnson and defending Big East long jump champion Janessa Murphy took third in the jumps for Pitt. Johnson (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) cleared a height of 1.60 meters in the high jump, while Murphy (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) launched herself an ECAC qualifying distances of 5.92 meters in the long jump and 11.72 in the triple jump.
Pitt will return to State College, Pa., next week for the Penn State National Open on Jan. 25-26.
