Pitt Track and Field Back In State College for Penn State National Open

Jan. 24, 2008

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt men's and women's track and field teams will travel once again to State College, Pa. for the Penn State National Open, which begins on Friday, Jan. 25.

Last weekend at the Penn State Indoor open, both the men and women posted numerous top-five performances.

Sam Bair (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and Eric Fleming (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) both had Big East and IC4A qualifying times of 2:23.85 and 2:26.08 in the 1000 meters and claimed second and third place, respectively. This weekend, the pair will take part in three events for the Panthers, including the mile run and the 3200-meter relay.

Joining that relay team will be senior Eric Burnett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), who earned All-Big East honors during last year's indoor season for his efforts in the event. Also competing for the men will be All-American Mike Wray (Philadelphia, Pa./Central Catholic High School). Wray will take part in the 60-meter hurdles, an event in which he holds the school record and the eighth fastest time in NCAA history (7.61).

While Bair, Fleming, Brunett and Wray are burning up the track, three other Panthers will be showing their prowess in the field events. A.J. Kielinski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic) will take on the competition in the weight throw and Eric Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Gateway) and Brandon Turner (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) will compete in the triple jump.

The women's team also recorded several strong performances last weekend, as junior Janessa Murphy (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) posted ECAC qualifying distances of 5.92 meters in the long jump and 11.72 in the triple jump. Joining Murphy will be the sprinting tandem of Shanea and Shantea Caloun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross), who will take part in three events over the weekend: the 60 and 200 meter dashes and the 1600-meter relay.

Mycaiah Clemons (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) will enter the 60-meter hurdles, while Amy Ruffolo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Alexandra Briggs (Washington, Pa./Washington) are scheduled to compete in distance events, as well as in the invitational.

The Panthers will compete in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup next week for their third of three consecutive meets in State College, Pa. on Feb. 1-2.
