CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh men’s and women’s track and field teams combined to record four first place finishes in their opening meet of the outdoor season at the Irwin Belk Track hosted by the Charlotte 49ers.
The men’s long distance team was especially impressive as the Panthers won the 1,500 meter race and the 3,000 meter race. Daniel Lipus placed first in the 1,500 with a time of 3:49.26. Andrew Cerrito followed that up by winning with 3,000 in 8:36.31.
The Panthers also captured the top spot for the men’s and women’s javelin throw. For the women, sophomore Taylor Slaney won the women’s competition with a throw of 46.71m (153-03), while junior Brett Millar took the men’s event with a distance of 61.44m (201-07 feet). Pitt had three athletes in the top five for the men as Joshia Rupert and Alexander Bleacher finished fourth and fifth with distances of 58.87m and 58.47m, respectively.
Pitt also had numerous athletes make the finals of their events. Elizabeth Kline, fresh off her Big East title in the pentathlon, placed seventh overall in the 100 meter hurdles with a time 14.12.
After qualifying seventh with a time of 1:04.43 in the prelims of the 400 meter hurdles, Natalie Ryan ran three second faster in the finals and finished third overall in a time of 1:01.91, shattering her previous career-best time by three seconds. Evann Thompson was right behind her with a fourth place finish in a time of 1:02.31.
In the men’s 400 meter hurdles, Dustin Fuller
qualified fifth with a time of 56.84 and then finished seventh in the finals in 55.53.
In the women’s 3,000 meter run, the Panthers had three top -10 finished led by Hillary Brown. Brown was seventh with a time of 10:36.47. Hillary Boxheimer and Alexandra Cady placed ninth and tenth overall with times of 10:38.88 and 10:43.94.
Other notable performances include Luke Gallaher taking second place in the high jump with a height of 6-9.75 feet, Paige Lumley with a fifth place finish in the triple jump (38-08.25 feet – career-best), and Andrew Wells in the discus who placed third with a throw of 54.50m.
The women’s 4x100 meter relay team of Ashley Woodford, Funmi Alabi, Taranisha Taylor and Jonnique Lawrence placed third in 48.50, and then the 4x400 meter relay team Arielle Fonrose, Lawrence, Jordan Lee and Woodford placed second with a time of 3:45.87.
The Panthers are back in action next weekend at Cal U. Early Bird Invitational. The meet is scheduled for March 23rd in California, Pa.
